It’s hard to believe that the 2017-18 college financial aid application cycle is already under way!


At 12:01am on October 1, 2016, the 2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Iowa Financial Aid Application became available to students, 3 months earlier than the traditional January 1 timeframe.  In addition, the newly developed Iowa Financial Aid Application made its debut.


The 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application is available on the Iowa College Aid website (, or directly at  


As of this morning, over 800 applicants had completed the 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application.


Application deadlines for state scholarship/grant programs in 2017-18 are available on the Iowa College Aid website:



  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for need-based state and federal financial aid.
  • The 2016-17 FAFSA can be completed beginning October 1, 2016 at

Raise ME

Through a new program called, your student can automatically earn scholarships from colleges each time he or she achieves any of the following goals in school:

  • Get an A in a course  ($100 - $1,000)

  • Get a B in a course ($50 - $600)

  • Participate in a school club or sport ($25 - $250)

  • And much more

Our school is among the first in the country to take advantage of this opportunity, which is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.S. colleges.  High school students will be given information about and the opportunity to create an account during their STAR (advisory) time.

Here is how you can best support your student to get the most from this opportunity:

  1. Ensure that your student creates an account at

Congratulate your student for regularly adding good grades, community service, extracurricular activities, and other achievements to his or her “Portfolio” in order to earn “Micro-Scholarships” from colleges.  Your student is eligible to receive scholarship money for each achievement from the start of 9th grade until midway through 12th grade.

Colleges are added on a monthly basis and you can request colleges at any time.  Your student will automatically get related Micro-Scholarships from all new colleges as they become available.





The Michelle Rima Memorial Scholarship Inc will be awarding multiple $1,000.00 scholarships once again to Starmont High School graduating seniors who plan to further his or her education. 


Applicants must:

            1. be a current graduating Starmont senior

            2. plan to attend a college, university, community college or junior college

            3. have a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

            4. be active in school activities and of good moral character

            5. apply by March 1

            6. not be an officer or a child of any officer of the Michelle Rima Memorial

            Scholarship, Inc.

Ronette Yarger Carnall

Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in the name and memory of Ronette Yarger Carnall, a dedicated and passionate educator with Starmont Schools for 43 years. Following her death in April of 2014, a scholarship in the amount of $500 has been made possible by friends, family, and colleagues.

Scholarship Selection Criteria:

Students applying for this scholarship will be considered if the following criteria are met:

1. Must be a graduate of Starmont High School.

2. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

3. Be enrolled and accepted as a full time student at a two or four-year college or university for the 2017-2018 school year.

4. Seeking a certificate in education. A focus on language arts, English, or literature will increase selection consideration.

For the 2016-1017 school year, Mediacom Communications is again offering 55 $1,000 non-renewable scholarships to senior high schools students.  All completed applications must include an essay on leadership, the applicant's school transcript and two filled-out recommendation forms.

About Steve Loven
This scholarship honors Steve Loven, an ICAN founder whose professional career was dedicated to promoting financial aid and college planning success for Iowa students and the school counseling profession on many levels. Over the past 30 years, his work included being the Financial Aid Director at AIB College of Business and Des Moines Area Community College. Steve joined the Iowa College Access Network in 1999. As a founding member of the ICAN team, Steve worked
tirelessly for 15 years, greatly contributing to the success and significant contributions ICAN makes each year in 99% of Iowa high schools. Steve is now enjoying retirement.
The Scholarship 
This scholarship is designed to recognize students who will be attending a two- or four-year institution in Iowa and have worked to prepare for their post-high school endeavors through career and college readiness programs with both their school counselor and the Iowa College Access Network.

The Essay

  • How the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) helped prepare them for their post-high school endeavors.
  • Describe how their school counselor promoted a culture of college and career readiness at their school.
  • The school counselor must be mentioned by name, and examples of school counseling excellence and a positive perception of a college-going culture should be provided.

Fall/2017 DMACC Foundation Scholarship

This is a unique opportunity that only the Graduating High School Seniors are eligible to apply for and they will not be competing against any current DMACC students.  The average scholarship amount is $500 and students are eligible to apply every semester. 


The application deadline is Friday, March 3rd at 4 p.m.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:  Current High School Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher

                                              Plan on attending any DMACC Campus for Fall/2017

                                              Student must be taking at least 6 credit hours at DMACC - Fall/2017

The Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) is proud to continue the Health Care Careers Scholarship program for the twelfth year.  Available through the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF), an IHA subsidiary. For the last ten years these scholarships of up to $6,000 ($3,000 per year for a maximum of two years).  In 2016 IHA increased the scholarship amount to $3500, the first increase in the 10 year history of the program due to college tuition inflation (maintaining the same number of scholarships awarded). IHERF has supported higher education for 329 Iowa college students.
The ultimate goal of this program is to fill Iowa health care positions that currently have a notable number of openings by offering significant financial support to students seeking health care education or training.  In exchange for that financial support, each award recipient must commit to working one year in an Iowa hospital for each year of scholarship award.
Placement opportunities will be identified for each IHA geographic district (a map is included with the application). Scholarship applications will be scored and awards made based on each applicant’s qualifications.  All portions of the application form must be submitted by March 30, 2017
IHA would appreciate your support and promotion of this scholarship.  You may know of someone in your local community interested in a health care career, a hospital employee looking for advancement, a current student enrolled in a qualified health care program or a family member or friend of an employee interested in a health care career. The Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is again offering scholarships to individuals from the RMC service area who will attend an Iowa Educational Institution in a human medical field of study for the year 2017-2018.  RMC's service area includes Delaware County, and portions of Clayton, Buchanan, Dubuque, Fayette, Jones, and Linn Counties.
Applications are open to anyone whose permanent address is within the Regional Medical Center service area, regardless of age, race, creed, color or national origin.  Selection is based on academic record, financial need, a sincere interest in the human medical field and participation in extracurricular and community activities.

We are proud to announce that the employees and friends of NEICAC have raised money to finance scholarships again this year.  Scholarships will be awarded to low income individuals in our service area to help students continue their education.  Attached you will find the application packet which includes application criteria and income guidelines.

Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize - Essay Contests
Students are asked to evaluate the significance of Emir Abdelkader's life values and his struggles during peace, war, imprisonment, and exile in light of current events in America, the world, and in their own lives. Abdelkader was an Arab Muslim hero admired from Missouri to Moscow to Mecca and by world leaders such as President Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and Pope Pius IX. Essays are due April 15, 2017.

The Abdelkader Education Project (AEP) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that develops educational tools and resources and provides outreach to promote cultural literacy, civility, and respectful engagement between Muslims and non-Muslims by drawing on Emir Abdelkader’s life story and values – courage, integrity, intellect, humility and compassion – that transcend culture and faith traditions.

The Delaware County Pork Producers Board wishes to encourage any high school seniors entering an agriculture career by offering a $500 scholarship.


Eligible students must meet the following requirements:

  • Senior in High School
  • Resident of Delaware County
  • Enrolling in a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university
  • Pursuing a career in agriculture or an agricultural related field
  • Must MAINTAIN a 2.75 GPA during the 1st semester of college


    The Scholarship will be awarded after the board receives the first semester verification of enrollment and grades. The student is responsible to get this verification to the board.


    To be considered, the following must be submitted by April 7, 2017:

  1. A 500-word essay on a Pork/Swine related topic
  2. Brief Personal Biography
  3. Two letters of reference

Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship
This is a scholarship in honor of former Iowa State University basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in the fall of 1997. We have been awarding this scholarship since 1998. This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female each year. Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors for the 2016-2017 school year who have previously participated in any Iowa Games events (Summer Iowa Games, Winter Iowa Games, Iowa Games Net Fest or Iowa Games Mud Run).

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship is now available for seniors who are of the Protestant Faith, a resident of the State of Iowa, and will be attending the University of Iowa as a full-time student.

One senior female student athlete and one male student athlete will each be awarded a continuing education grant for up to two-thousand dollars ($2,000).  To be considered, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, participation in athletics and service to their school and community.
