FAFSA

It’s hard to believe that the 2017-18 college financial aid application cycle is already under way!

 

At 12:01am on October 1, 2016, the 2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Iowa Financial Aid Application became available to students, 3 months earlier than the traditional January 1 timeframe.  In addition, the newly developed Iowa Financial Aid Application made its debut.

 

The 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application is available on the Iowa College Aid website (www.iowacollegeaid.gov), or directly at https://icaps.iowacollegeaid.gov/ICAPS/ApplicationProcess/ApplicationMainPage.aspx.  

 

As of this morning, over 800 applicants had completed the 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application.

 

Application deadlines for state scholarship/grant programs in 2017-18 are available on the Iowa College Aid website: https://www.iowacollegeaid.gov/content/state-grants-scholarships.

 

 

  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for need-based state and federal financial aid.
  • The 2016-17 FAFSA can be completed beginning October 1, 2016 at www.fafsa.gov.

Raise ME

Through a new program called raise.me, your student can automatically earn scholarships from colleges each time he or she achieves any of the following goals in school:

  • Get an A in a course  ($100 - $1,000)

  • Get a B in a course ($50 - $600)

  • Participate in a school club or sport ($25 - $250)

  • And much more

Our school is among the first in the country to take advantage of this opportunity, which is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.S. colleges.  High school students will be given information about raise.me and the opportunity to create an account during their STAR (advisory) time.

Here is how you can best support your student to get the most from this opportunity:

  1. Ensure that your student creates an account at www.raise.me.

  2. Congratulate your student for regularly adding good grades, community service, extracurricular activities, and other achievements to his or her raise.me “Portfolio” in order to earn “Micro-Scholarships” from colleges.  Your student is eligible to receive scholarship money for each achievement from the start of 9th grade until midway through 12th grade.  

  3. Visit www.raise.me/parents for more information.

We hope using raise.me will make your student’s path to college both more fun and affordable.

Colleges are added on a monthly basis and you can request colleges at any time.  Your student will automatically get related Micro-Scholarships from all new colleges as they become available.

IOWA STUDENT LOAN GIVEAWAY

You may enter a drawing for two $500 awards for school financial literacy programs.  Simply go to http://www.IowaStudentLoan.org/SchoolGiveaway to view a short video demonstrating how College Funding Forecaster works, and then enter your contact information.

Students and families who complete College Funding Forecaster between March 13 and June 9, 2017, will be able to enter to win awards through weekly drawings for two $250 awards and a single grand prize drawing for two $1,500 to be paid to the student's college in the fall.

 

HORATIO ALGER NATIONAL CAREER AND TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for the Horatio Alger Scholarship program, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • completed high school by spring 2017
  • be enrolled in a career or technical degree/certification program in the Fall of 2017
  • demonstrate financial need, applicants must be Pell Grant eligible
  • under the age of 30
  • be a United States citizen

Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship
 
 
This is a scholarship in honor of former Iowa State University basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in the fall of 1997. We have been awarding this scholarship since 1998. This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female each year. Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors for the 2016-2017 school year who have previously participated in any Iowa Games events (Summer Iowa Games, Winter Iowa Games, Iowa Games Net Fest or Iowa Games Mud Run).

PEARL HULL FALK SCHOLARSHIP

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship is now available for seniors who are of the Protestant Faith, a resident of the State of Iowa, and will be attending the University of Iowa as a full-time student.

UNITYPOINT SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

One senior female student athlete and one male student athlete will each be awarded a continuing education grant for up to two-thousand dollars ($2,000).  To be considered, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, participation in athletics and service to their school and community.

To apply, students should download, complete and submit their applications to their High School Principal by May 12, 2017.  The application and all the details can be found at http://www.unitypointscholarathletes.com

 

 

ROBERT D. BLUE SCHOLARSHIP

The 2017 Robert D. Blue Scholarship application is now available online at rdblue.org. Students who wish to apply for the scholarship are required to complete the application online by visiting rdblue.org.

The Robert D. Blue scholarship is made possible by the Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation. Any Iowa student who plans to attend an Iowa college or university is eligible for this award. Applicants are expected to demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
