It’s hard to believe that the 2017-18 college financial aid application cycle is already under way!


At 12:01am on October 1, 2016, the 2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Iowa Financial Aid Application became available to students, 3 months earlier than the traditional January 1 timeframe.  In addition, the newly developed Iowa Financial Aid Application made its debut.


The 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application is available on the Iowa College Aid website (, or directly at  


As of this morning, over 800 applicants had completed the 2017-18 Iowa Financial Aid Application.


Application deadlines for state scholarship/grant programs in 2017-18 are available on the Iowa College Aid website:



  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for need-based state and federal financial aid.
  • The 2016-17 FAFSA can be completed beginning October 1, 2016 at




Raise ME

Through a new program called, your student can automatically earn scholarships from colleges each time he or she achieves any of the following goals in school:

  • Get an A in a course  ($100 - $1,000)

  • Get a B in a course ($50 - $600)

  • Participate in a school club or sport ($25 - $250)

  • And much more

Our school is among the first in the country to take advantage of this opportunity, which is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.S. colleges.  High school students will be given information about and the opportunity to create an account during their STAR (advisory) time.

Here is how you can best support your student to get the most from this opportunity:

  1. Ensure that your student creates an account at

  2. Congratulate your student for regularly adding good grades, community service, extracurricular activities, and other achievements to his or her “Portfolio” in order to earn “Micro-Scholarships” from colleges.  Your student is eligible to receive scholarship money for each achievement from the start of 9th grade until midway through 12th grade.

Colleges are added on a monthly basis and you can request colleges at any time.  Your student will automatically get related Micro-Scholarships from all new colleges as they become available.





Ronette Yarger Carnall

Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in the name and memory of Ronette Yarger Carnall, a dedicated and passionate educator with Starmont Schools for 43 years. Following her death in April of 2014, a scholarship in the amount of $500 has been made possible by friends, family, and colleagues.

Scholarship Selection Criteria:

Students applying for this scholarship will be considered if the following criteria are met:

1. Must be a graduate of Starmont High School.

2. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

3. Be enrolled and accepted as a full time student at a two or four-year college or university for the 2017-2018 school year.

4. Seeking a certificate in education. A focus on language arts, English, or literature will increase selection consideration.

Marty Morris Scholarship

You may enter a drawing for two $500 awards for school financial literacy programs.  Simply go to to view a short video demonstrating how College Funding Forecaster works, and then enter your contact information.

Students and families who complete College Funding Forecaster between March 13 and June 9, 2017, will be able to enter to win awards through weekly drawings for two $250 awards and a single grand prize drawing for two $1,500 to be paid to the student's college in the fall.




The Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) is proud to continue the Health Care Careers Scholarship program for the twelfth year.  Available through the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF), an IHA subsidiary. For the last ten years these scholarships of up to $6,000 ($3,000 per year for a maximum of two years).  In 2016 IHA increased the scholarship amount to $3500, the first increase in the 10 year history of the program due to college tuition inflation (maintaining the same number of scholarships awarded). IHERF has supported higher education for 329 Iowa college students.
The ultimate goal of this program is to fill Iowa health care positions that currently have a notable number of openings by offering significant financial support to students seeking health care education or training.  In exchange for that financial support, each award recipient must commit to working one year in an Iowa hospital for each year of scholarship award.
Placement opportunities will be identified for each IHA geographic district (a map is included with the application). Scholarship applications will be scored and awards made based on each applicant’s qualifications.  All portions of the application form must be submitted by March 30, 2017
IHA would appreciate your support and promotion of this scholarship.  You may know of someone in your local community interested in a health care career, a hospital employee looking for advancement, a current student enrolled in a qualified health care program or a family member or friend of an employee interested in a health care career. Please share the enclosed information and encourage them to apply.

All applications will be submitted online at the IHERF scholarship website which will help students confirm their eligibility before beginning the application process.  This will allow for electronic submission of their application, college program verification and references.

The Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is again offering scholarships to individuals from the RMC service area who will attend an Iowa Educational Institution in a human medical field of study for the year 2017-2018.  RMC's service area includes Delaware County, and portions of Clayton, Buchanan, Dubuque, Fayette, Jones, and Linn Counties.
Applications are open to anyone whose permanent address is within the Regional Medical Center service area, regardless of age, race, creed, color or national origin.  Selection is based on academic record, financial need, a sincere interest in the human medical field and participation in extracurricular and community activities.

Fidelity Bank & Trust will award sixteen area High School Seniors with a $500 Scholarship each. Requirements are as follows:
  • Applicant as well as parent/guardian must be a customer.  Applicant must possess a cumulative GPA of at least a C
  • Applicant must pursue post secondary education at any institution which provides a two or four year program or Vocational training
  • Applicant must be a high school senior

To be eligible for the Horatio Alger Scholarship program, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • completed high school by spring 2017
  • be enrolled in a career or technical degree/certification program in the Fall of 2017
  • demonstrate financial need, applicants must be Pell Grant eligible
  • under the age of 30
  • be a United States citizen

We are proud to announce that the employees and friends of NEICAC have raised money to finance scholarships again this year.  Scholarships will be awarded to low income individuals in our service area to help students continue their education.  Attached you will find the application packet which includes application criteria and income guidelines.


Please feel free to make as many copies as needed and/or post under the scholarship link on your school website.  You will see that there is also a “fillable” version of the application attached.  Applications must be returned to our office, located at 305 Montgomery St., Decorah, IA by 4:30pm on Friday, April 7, 2017.  All information, as outlined on the application, must be completed and submitted with the application for consideration.

Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize - Essay Contests
Students are asked to evaluate the significance of Emir Abdelkader's life values and his struggles during peace, war, imprisonment, and exile in light of current events in America, the world, and in their own lives. Abdelkader was an Arab Muslim hero admired from Missouri to Moscow to Mecca and by world leaders such as President Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and Pope Pius IX. Essays are due April 15, 2017.

The Abdelkader Education Project (AEP) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that develops educational tools and resources and provides outreach to promote cultural literacy, civility, and respectful engagement between Muslims and non-Muslims by drawing on Emir Abdelkader’s life story and values – courage, integrity, intellect, humility and compassion – that transcend culture and faith traditions.

The Delaware County Pork Producers Board wishes to encourage any high school seniors entering an agriculture career by offering a $500 scholarship.


Eligible students must meet the following requirements:

  • Senior in High School
  • Resident of Delaware County
  • Enrolling in a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university
  • Pursuing a career in agriculture or an agricultural related field
  • Must MAINTAIN a 2.75 GPA during the 1st semester of college


    The Scholarship will be awarded after the board receives the first semester verification of enrollment and grades. The student is responsible to get this verification to the board.


    To be considered, the following must be submitted by April 7, 2017:

  1. A 500-word essay on a Pork/Swine related topic
  2. Brief Personal Biography
  3. Two letters of reference

Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship
This is a scholarship in honor of former Iowa State University basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in the fall of 1997. We have been awarding this scholarship since 1998. This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female each year. Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors for the 2016-2017 school year who have previously participated in any Iowa Games events (Summer Iowa Games, Winter Iowa Games, Iowa Games Net Fest or Iowa Games Mud Run).

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship is now available for seniors who are of the Protestant Faith, a resident of the State of Iowa, and will be attending the University of Iowa as a full-time student.

One senior female student athlete and one male student athlete will each be awarded a continuing education grant for up to two-thousand dollars ($2,000).  To be considered, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, participation in athletics and service to their school and community.

The Robert D. Blue scholarship is made possible by the Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation. Any Iowa student who plans to attend an Iowa college or university is eligible for this award. Applicants are expected to demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
